Noteworthy Projects
Here are several of my projects done without any regard for profit…
Connecting
If I had to pick only one of my projects, created in a euphoria of philanthropic inspiration, it would be Deep Spirits. It was a project thought up by me, and executed in cooperation with Ryan Nore and Mirjana Mut. It was Ryan who came up with the name “Deep Spirits” though, and the fact that a domain name as beautiful as DeepSpirits.com was still available on December 13th 2009, when even ridiculously sounding names were already long gone, seemed like a miracle at the time. Or, maybe a sign. Maybe it waited for us.
“While some run in circles, deep spirits need to connect” became the slogan, thought up by me, and it was created under maximum pressure to launch ‘yesterday’. A modest version of DS went live at the end of December 2009, and during the following few months the site continued to grow exponentially. While its purpose and calling weren’t exactly mainstream, with headlines such as The Quest for Truth, or The Exploration of Beauty, Deep Spirits is still a well visited website, offering many facets of beauty and inspiration to the global community.
Homdor
Homdor is the second version of a much older project, back from 2000, titled Sion; an online city, created in Flash, in which visitors could explore and play. It was a place ruled by art, culture and magic. It was created by Ryan and myself, and we were relentless. I still remember the 3-4 hour shifts of sleep during the creation of that project. Sion was a big success back then. We kept updating it and adding small improvements, but soon realized that we wanted to make an all-new version.
Homdor.com launched on January 1st 2007. It was visually similar to Sion, but it was also the next step. Now visitors could register, for free, chat with each other, collect points for various games and discoveries, and above all, almost any area in Homdor offered the possibility for users to contribute and so help make the city better. The main areas of interest include art (visual arts), literature, music, movies, psychology, divination, humor, cooking, and various forms of puzzles, playful riddles, educational quizzes and tests.
We of course have plans for a new version, but when exactly that will happen is not certain.
Ego Dialogues
Ego Dialogues was never really meant to be anything grand. It was rather a box into which I threw various things I liked or knew I wanted to keep for later. Kind of like advanced bookmarking.
But then, slowly, unexpectedly, I started receiving fan mail or encouraging comments from visitors, and I gradually came to understand that Ego Dialogues was not only extremely well visited, but that at least the occasional visitor found much more in it than a beautiful picture or a laugh.
It was launched in March of 2007, and for some time it was a well-maintained website, with loads of traffic. I turned to other things later, but Ego Dialogues still has its purpose, even today, and even though things have quieted down since its glory days. So, it stays.
Top Tip Spot
Top Tip Spot was supposed to be a joint venture with someone. They pulled out, and I pulled the project through on my own. I didn’t write all the articles myself, but I wrote some (guess which!)… and hired writers for the rest. That was at the beginning of 2009.
The idea of sharing knowledge and having a website solely dedicated to collecting useful advice and helpful tips appealed to me. Top Tip Spot was, in a certain simplistic way, a predecessor of Deep Spirits. The tips are sorted in 11 distinct categories: Arts & crafts, beauty, computers, food, green eco tips, health, home, outdoors & camping, people & relationships, sports, and self-made gift ideas.
