Writings

When I received an award for an essay I wrote about my father, at the age of twelve, I didn’t think much about it. A few years later however, when I was fifteen, I wrote my first two very significant poems, and this time the reactions undoubtedly impressed me. I suspect I was more ready to be impressed, as well as starving to be understood. This being understood, the need for others to see the real me, became the major motivation for my writings, for some time.

Now, I am primarily driven by two things. I like to play with words, so sometimes I do. And, I have things to say about a number of topics. I came to realize, one astonishing experience at a time, that a number of very straightforward and obvious things are either ‘left around the corner and backwards’ or simply confusing to others.

The Language Dilemma

Which language should I write in though? My native tongue is definitely a possibility, except that I don’t feel too playful about its exploration. German, on the other hand, is a very powerful as well as poetic language (believe it or not), and I am really good at it. My German written thoughts are expressed clearly and beautifully. Or should it be English? The language that I now speak more often than any other, at least for the past 10 years of my marriage. More is not necessarily better though, and so I came to realize that should I write in English, I would need to elaborate on my education. Thesaurus and dictionary to the rescue. My spirit is my spirit, regardless the language. Hopefully this spirit will overwhelm the reader to such an extent that minor mistakes are overlooked. Maybe a minor mistake today becomes a witty word-play tomorrow? Besides, what are editors for (and where do you find one of those)?

So, English it is.

I am mainly interested in writing short stories and certain non-fiction topics, but I have also written a (very) few poems in prose, which you can read in the Impetus Stimulus.
